Jerry Wainwright, Head Coach, DePaul University (Former
Head Coach UNCW):
“I first met Lamont Franklin in the spring of 1994 when I
became the head basketball coach at the University of North
Carolina at Wilmington. For the next three years, Lamont was a
starting guard on our teams and also served as a team captain
his junior and senior year. His playing ability and leadership
helped bring UNCW's basketball program to the top of the
Colonial Athletic Association league. Upon completion of his
playing eligibility, Lamont then became a member of my
basketball staff at UNCW as he began a career of working with
and coaching young people. Having coached basketball at all
levels for 39 years, I can say without reservation that Lamont
epitomized all that is good in what interscholastic athletics
should be all about. He was dedicated, knowledgeable, loyal
and a true team player. He has taken all those traits to the
next level as a coach, and he is someone that I would want my
son to play for as he truly cares about the young people he
works with, not just as players but as young men. Lamont
Franklin is a family man and he will always be part of a
program that stresses family values. I am proud that I coached
him and I am even prouder to call him friend.”
Tom Herrion, Assistant Coach, University of Pittsburgh
(Former Head Coach, College of Charleston):
"Lamont is a dynamic young coach who has the unique ability to
communicate and relate with young people and that coupled with
his tremendous basketball knowledge have allowed him to attain
success in the coaching profession wherever he has been. His
passion, work ethic and energy are contagious and the young
people he coaches are very fortunate to have him as a leader."
Jeffrey Reynolds, Head Coach, Air Force (Former Assistant
Coach UNCW):
“He truly was an outstanding Basketball player and even a
better person who achieved success both on the court and in
the classroom. Having played the point guard position he was a
coach on the floor…..he always knew where to be and knew where
his teammates needed to be as well. The team’s success was in
part to his leadership. Lamont took his leadership to the next
level after graduation…becoming one of the bright young
coaches in college basketball moving rapidly up the coaching
profession ladder. He knows the game very well and is a
superior teacher of the fundamentals…….He is tremendous at
improving player’s skills at all levels. Having recruited and
coached Lamont it comes to no surprise that he quickly became
a very respected coach and recruiter on the college
level……….He knows and has a very friendly way to make players
at all ages feel comfortable and work hard to want to become
better. Lamont approaches Coaching and teaching the game the
same way he does life………with true courage ,confidence and
professionalism balanced by good nature and grace. He is one
of my former players that I have great respect for and know
that he will not only be a success in his endeavors but will
help young people strive to be successfully in their future
endeavors in the great game of basketball both even more
importantly in the game of LIFE.”
Jamion Christian, Assistant Coach, Bucknell University
(Former Player, Mt. St. Mary’s):
"Lamont Franklin is simply one of the best in the business.
While playing under him I learned a great deal of what it
means to be a good teammate and what it means to lead. I
played for him at a time when we were not very good and he
laid the foundation for our success in the future. A tireless
worker, a person who has no fear in putting in long hours and
a person who has no fear to make those around them great.
There are many great coaches whose only concern is basketball,
“wins and loses,” coach Franklin is one of the good ones
concerned more so with “how have you improved today.” He
taught me to focus on my work and that the outcome will take
care of itself, but we must improve, we must get better, we
must make the commitment to get better. I have a greater
appreciation for Coach Franklin now in my life because I have
chosen to follow him as a coach. I saw on a daily basis how he
made our lives better through interaction, through teaching us
the right way to live and make choices. We became better
basketball players because he asked us too. We became better
people because he demanded it of us!"
Otto German, Director of Compliance, College of Charleston:
“Lamont Franklin is one of the finest young men that I have
come in contact with in my 32 years in higher education. I
knew him for the time period he was employed here at the
College of Charleston as one of our assistant basketball
coaches. He is a very bright and highly competent young man
who has set high goals for himself, then exerts all the effort
and discipline necessary to achieve them. He established a
great working relationship with those here in the Athletics
Department.”
Scott Wainwright, Assistant Coach, DePaul University
(Former Teammate UNCW):
"I have been lucky enough to call him a colleague for the last
10 years but more importantly, a friend. Lamont’s basketball
knowledge is second to none. Lamont played point guard for
eight years for 2 very good coaches in high school and
college. Both of those coaches demanded a lot out of him to be
their “coach on the floor”. Having played with Lamont, his
leadership was easy to follow. Off the floor is where he is
truly special. His character and family values are an example
for people to follow. He represents the type of person it
takes to teach and coach the athletes of today’s time, having
played in the battles on the court, and succeeding off the
court.”
Dr. Bill Mayew, Professor, Duke University (Former Teammate
UNCW - Jersey #35 retired):
"As a teammate, coach and friend, Lamont is as dedicated as
they come. As a player he made himself and those around him as
good as they could be by refusing to accept less than 100%
effort. Lamont always led by example and his commitment to
success went well beyond the basketball court. Lamont was well
respected by his professors and by members of the community
simply because he gave maximum effort in those areas as well.
It's easy to see why Lamont has had success as a coach at all
levels of basketball - he holds his players accountable for
their talents in all facets of their lives, and as a player
what more could you ask for?"
Lynn Brown, Parent (Cedar Park Christian School):
“As a parent, I have witnessed him demonstrating positive
character traits that uplift the spirits of burdened
teenagers. He is intense about basketball skills and teaches
basketball with a positive outlook and adds fun to the
practices. He handles both parents and kids with respect.
Lamont is receptive to questioning students and is open to
that communication. He is a wonderful coach and finds a way to
identify with his players.”
